The sweet escape

The ‘sweet tooth’ businesses of the Midlands have been in the public eye for the past 12 months, with one in particular swamping both the local and national news agenda. Looking at what might be on the cards for them in the future, Grad Central has looked at whether these businesses’ employees could be in for a bittersweet symphony or just a sugar rush for 2010.

The handover of local chocolate maker Cadbury has now been made official over the past month, but in an effort to keep its existing employees happy, American food giant Kraft has reassured the existing Bourneville team that this partnership will only lead to good things.

Having forked over a hefty £11.5 billion, Kraft is keen to show that this money will be invested in the future growth of the company, including new jobs. "We're ready to take both Kraft Foods and Cadbury to a level neither could reach on its own," Ms Rosenfeld had told shareholders recently. However, I suspect those now working for the overseas business may see the deal in a different light should their jobs be in jeopardy.

On a more positive note, it really has been a great start to the year for Midlands based confectioner Thorntons, reporting a 24.6 per cent rise in profits. And what’s more, they’re keen to take on graduate talent to drive forward its ongoing success – for those of you with a sweet tooth and a keen eye for chocolate may smell sweet success!

Suitability to the job and utilising the most of graduate skills is the message that Grad Central wants to drive home, and we’re hoping to match up more and more businesses and graduates in 2010.
