Watch out, recruiters are about!

17 Dec 09 - 4:02PM  | General recruitment |  Graduate

Looking for a job or hiring a new employee can often seem a tricky and laborious task and with recruitment services to choose from, many of which crop up online and have a similar look and feel to them, so it might be hard to differentiate which ones are legit or not.

One of the main worries that people have when using a recruitment service are the fees behind a service. Don’t get me wrong, there are agencies out there who can justify the money with a high calibre of service on offer. However, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) has revealed that UK companies waste £1 million a day on poor recruitment, with the average cost of filling a vacancy at £3,950.

At a time where money is tight, we cannot afford to see bad results when investing in employees, with poor recruitment practices including ineffective job advertisements, interviewing candidates not suitable for the job or placing workers in inappropriate roles for their skills.

Graduates also need to be careful of the pitfalls associated with bogus recruitment agencies who may charge unexpectedly, especially for services such as CV writing, application form completion and interview role-play.

These hidden costs are illegal under the Employment Agencies Act 1973, therefore, agencies who provide these that can be charged for MUST inform work-seekers before taking any money from them.

Other things to take into account when surfing recruitment agency websites are:

  • Bad spelling and grammar – sounds weird but can often mean it is a foreign company that cannot offer anything to graduates in the UK.
  • Credit card details – don’t be fooled into entering any such information on a recruitment website or over the phone, even if you have not agreed to pay for any services.
  • Salaries – not to sound cynical but always be suspicious of job positions with overpriced salaries, do your research into your job and the average salary on offer.
